Trump’s Embarrassing Feud with Zelensky Proves Just How Far Republicans Have Fallen

Donald Trump has humiliated himself, and our country, by throwing a tantrum at President Volodymyr Zelensky. Instead of standing with Ukraine as it fights for survival, Trump is once again siding with Russia. And the Republican Party is tripping over itself to defend him.

Ukraine has been fighting a full-scale Russian invasion for over three years. Tens of thousands of Ukrainians have died, entire cities have been flattened, and Putin’s goal is clearly to erase Ukraine as a sovereign nation. And yet, Trump, who still pretends to be a “tough guy” on foreign policy, has made it painfully obvious that he doesn’t care. He’s actively helping Putin by undermining U.S. support for Ukraine. And let’s be honest: Ukraine is just the beginning. If Putin gets his way, he won’t stop until he’s rebuilt as much of the former USSR as possible.

During a recent meeting, Trump berated Zelensky like a spoiled child, acting as if Ukraine owes him some kind of personal debt for U.S. support. Now, as if on cue, he’s pushing the idea that we should cut off military aid entirely, practically handing Putin an invitation to keep going. And because apparently he hasn’t done enough damage, he’s now floating the idea of easing sanctions on Russia. As of today, he has reportedly paused all military aid to Ukraine and is even considering inviting Russia back to the G7.

Let’s get something clear: Reagan (dare I say real or, at least, reasonable?) Republicans would never have stood for this. They built their entire legacy on opposing Russian aggression. But Trump? He’s making excuses for it. And his party? Completely spineless. (Is anyone surprised?) The same Republicans who claim to love “strength” are watching their leader bend over backwards for a dictator.

It’s embarrassing. The GOP once prided itself on standing up to tyranny. Now, its most prominent voices are too afraid to admit the obvious fact that Trump is siding with Putin.

At some point, there needs to be a reckoning. The Republican Party either believes in democracy and standing up to dictators, or it’s just a cult of personality that bends to Trump’s every whim. Right now, the choice they’re making is painfully obvious.
